What is an Accountant?

An Accountant is someone skilled at keeping business records. Generally someone capable of setting up the books needed for a business to operate and who can help a businessperson understand them. An Accountant may prepare your financial and operating statements under the direction of someone such as a CPA. Most Accountants are required to have at least a bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field.

Many Accountants specialize in areas such as Taxation, Human Resources, Employee Benefits, and Investment Planning. If you operate a business you may want to hire someone who is a Management Accountant (aka Cost Accountant, Corporate Accountant). These individuals are skilled in the recording and analysis of the financial information of the company for which they work. The Management Accountant will perform budgeting, performance evaluation, cost management and asset management.
