Bird Controls Continued…

Deciding on the Best Strategy

Bird control is very rarely achieved with one product or treatment. However, if you effectively use existing bird control methods, you should be able to find an approach that works for you. To decide on the best strategy, follow these steps:

  1. Evaluate your bird problem.

  2. Use an integrated approach.

  3. Start early with a control program.

  4. Avoid predictable control patterns.

Bird Control Options

If you have flocks of birds in your yard, nests in your trees or swallows in your eaves, you might want to start bird control.

Balloons, Discs and Moving Devices (Used before birds have built nests)

Balloons (e.g. scary or terror eyes) – This method involves using balloons that appear like predators to scare birds from a location. These can be installed along rooftops or fencerows.

Discs – These CD-sized devices are installed on every window that is attracting birds.
They have a highly reflective finish, along with a picture of a predatory bird, which causes them to become frightened.

Moving Devices (e.g. moving spider, motion-activated water sprayer) – These devices have a sensor that detects movement or vibration. When activated, a spider with a string or a spray of water will be released toward the bird.

Scented and Irritating Repellents (Once nests are established, you will need to use a stronger repellent.)

Although birds can't smell like humans, they experience a mild change in their physiological state when scented and irritating repellents are used. Some of these products are time-released, being discharged over a period of time. Others are simply placed on the ground or on a ledge to deter birds.

Granular – These are all-natural granules used outside for the purpose of preventing birds from defecating in a particular area.

Gel – This includes cartridges that fit in caulking guns. The substance is applied to the area where the birds are landing and roosting.

Spikes – These plastic strips include either plastic or stainless steel spikes that point in an upward direction. When placed on a fence or landing, it will deter birds from that area.

Sound Repellants

Ultrasound – This repellant is effective when used in a small area. A confined area enables the sound to be strong. When ultrasound is used in a wide-open area, the sound waves dissipate and loose their impact.

Bird Distress Emitter – A weatherproof device that produces a series of distress sounds as well as predatory noises.

Loud Canon – This device is ideal for wide open areas, such as fields and parking lots. It emits a loud boom every few minutes in an attempt to scare off birds in a large area.

Netting and Screening

Netting – This is used to protect a garden or crop from birds that choose to prey on fruit or vegetables. Netting is placed over the plants to guard them against prey.

Screening – This is a stronger, more rigid type of netting. It is generally used against large, strong and persistent birds.

Bird Trapping

When all other attempts have failed, the last option is to trap the birds. There are several traps on the market available to you.
