Computer Repair Continued…

Once you have tried all that, the next step is the computer manufacturer's manual. If you have lost the copy that came with your computer, you can often find copies online (if you can get online). If you think that new software might be the cause, try that manual as well. They usually have some sort of troubleshooting section included.

If manuals have failed you and you can get online, try searching for answers there. There are hundreds of tech support sites out there. Search through them to find your specific problem. Often just going to a search engine like Yahoo! or Google can help you find the answer you are looking for because, if it has happened to you, it has probably happened to somebody else.

Can't get online? Try the library or a bookstore. With all the new technology out there, more and more authors are writing books to help with this computer or that software. Do some research and see if you can get anywhere.

Computer Warranty

If you end up deciding that this problem is too much for you to handle and you are ready for outside help, your warranty should be the first thing you pull out. Is your computer still covered? If you are still covered, make sure you read the fine print before you get too excited. Many warranties include catches that will void your warranty if you add certain software or hardware to your computer. Make sure that none of them apply to you. If all is clear, follow the warranty's policy. You might have to send the computer in or you might have to bring it in to a certain shop. Whatever you do, make sure you get receipts for everything.

Technicians

If you none of the above options work out for you, a computer technician will be your final stop. Ask around town for a good one or start making some calls. Be sure to ask the cost of diagnosis, repair, and labor. If they come to you, you should also ask about travel costs. You'll also need to question them about their guarantee policy, and make sure you get that down in writing before you hand over your computer.
