Configuration Management

Configuration Management

Configuration management refers to keeping detailed records of the hardware and software used by a company, as well as any changes and updates made to the system. By keeping track of all of the versions of different programs and software used, the company can maintain what it has, as well as make changes that won't interfere with other areas of the system. Part of the configuration management records should also include all of the locations and addresses of the hardware for registration and tracking purposes.

Software Configuration Management

Configuration management is also used in developing software. When applied specifically to this process, it is called Unified Configuration Management, or UCM. UCM means that all of the steps used for developing the software, as well as various versions, are recorded, so that they can be reviewed or changed in the future. This is very important, as it helps programmers analyze past work and determine the best direction to take the software in.

Why Use Configuration Management?

Configuration management is an important tool in the organization of any company that uses technology and software, such as telemarketing firms. When it is clear what software is being used, changes made can be tracked. If, for example, a company doesn't keep close track of what software they are using, installing a new piece of software could potentially conflict with one of the old pieces of software, causing problems. This will result in lost time and money for the company that could have been avoided had the company successfully implemented a configuration management program.

Configuration Management Tools

In order to help with configuration management, there are software programs available that keep track of all of the hardware and software being used, as well as the versions, and any updates that are installed. This way, a computer technician can easily access all of the information for your system and safely and effectively complete any updates or changes. By keeping track of the system through the software, the company can also easily see what changes need to be made in order to keep the system running at its best.

Organization is Key

As with any aspect of a business, being organized is very important. A company keeps all of their financial history and records carefully organized and accessible so that they can analyze their needs and track progress. Configuration management provides the same type of organization, only relating specifically to software and hardware. Technology is important to businesses, and takes a lot of money. Therefore, making sure that your system is running the best it possibly can is smart business.
