What is a credit reporting agency?
There are three major credit reporting agencies in the United States, and countless local credit bureaus that are associated with the three. These three agencies are Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union.
These agencies are for profit organizations, and they are not associated with the government. However, they are regulated by the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions (FACT) Act of 2003. Credit reporting agencies are important because their reports can affect your eligibility for credit cards, loans, employment, and many other factors.
