When a corporation needs to fill a vacancy in the higher levels of its corporate structure, it may enlist the help of an executive search consultant. These individuals, known as “headhunters,” seek out executives who are looking to change companies and match them with their clients who need to fill an executive position. This works much the same way as a standard placement agency. However, these consultants generally work with candidates who boast annual salaries in excess of $100,000, and the market for the jobs is extremely competitive.

Who uses an Executive Search Consultant?

The executive search consultant's client is the hiring company, who pays the consultant a fee to find them a candidate for their vacant position. Since executive jobs are not simply advertised in the Sunday newspaper like many other types of employment, the consultant acts as a liaison between his or her client and potential candidates. The search frequently includes individuals who currently have high paying jobs, but who may be interested in leaving their current company. This allows the client company to find talent that would otherwise have remained in the hands of its competitors.
