Fiber Optics

Fiber optic cables are essentially just a different form of a traditional copper wire cable. Instead of using wires, these cables use extremely thin strands of glass to carry data. And, instead of transferring the data as electrical pulses, fiber optic cables transfer data as light pulses.

Parts of a Fiber Optic Cable

A fiber optic cable has a transmitter, the optical fiber, and a receiver. The transmitter takes coded electrical information and changes that information into light. Once the information becomes transferred into light, a laser diode is used as a light source to send the light pulses.
