There are many types of gavels available for clubs and organizations, and lawyers, judges and business executives. There are economical walnut finishes, solid walnut or rosewood gavels available for every budget; there are larger presentation gavels available for gifts and awards; many gavels are fitted with sterling silver or gold bands that are inscribed with a dedication or message; gavels can be purchased on stands or in presentation boxes; finally, gavel plaques are offered, with gavels adhered to signs with commemorative inscriptions.

Some gavels are also custom made. The process includes threading a handle into the head or fitting it into a socket with glue. These gavels are sometimes handcarved, handpainted, or inlaid with different woods and decorative materials.

Besides wood, there are other materials that have been commonly used for gavels, such as brass, nickel-plated brass, and glass. They are also sized according to total length – 8- inch ladies' size, 10 ½-inch standard size, and 11-inch judges' size.
