Graphic Designers Continued…

Web design is one of the fastest growing branches of graphic design. These designers work with several different software applications to layout and build web content. This includes writing HTML pages, creating Java applications, and Flash animations, as well as manipulating digital images for use on websites. Not only do web designers know how to create these digital documents, but they also should have a certain knowledge of the esthetic standards within a given medium.

Print and publication design is somewhat similar to web design, though the end product is destined for print. These designers may work on logos, print ads, or full layouts of brochures, flyers, magazines, or newspapers. These projects are frequently done in connection with a company's marketing department to communicate effectively with potential clients and the general public.

Product designers work to create an esthetically pleasing, functional object for the company to sell. As such, they will frequently work from sketches and models, though much of this work can now be done on computers. These designers work under the strictest constraints, as their final product must not only look appealing, but also function correctly and be cost-effective to manufacture.

Hiring and working with Graphic Designers

It is essential to understand that a graphic designer can only work with what he or she is given. Design is a collaborative effort, a process whereby the relationship between client and designer can be very close. The creative process also takes time and frequently the designer will offer a series of ideas so that the client can narrow down exactly what it is he or she is looking for.

It is also important to keep in mind that most graphic designers work as independent contractors, outside of the normal corporate hierarchy. As such, they frequently work on several projects at once with several different clients. Most will charge their clients an hourly rate, though some charge by the project.
