A messenger service, often called a courier, is used by businesses and organizations to ship documents or items quickly and safely. They are used when the postal service or standard overnight delivery is not sufficient. Items are hand delivered and signed for once they are received, so the shipment is guaranteed.
Although a messenger service can transport anything from envelopes to large truckloads of goods, they generally handle important documents such as legal papers and medical specimens or supplies, which are sensitive materials.
How it Works
A messenger service can guarantee delivery within hours in a large metropolitan area and even statewide. For items going out of state or around the globe, packages are usually guaranteed same day or next day delivery. Many services work just in a certain city, some for specific companies and some take business from anyone. When servicing a particular area, messengers use either bike or car transportation. Most messenger services have semi-trucks available for large packages traveling long distances. Large corporations often have their own messenger service that delivers packages between buildings or branches in a city or even throughout a single building.
