Outdoor Fireplace
An outdoor fireplace is a non-combustible, self-contained, manufactured cooking unit. Also called “outdoor fire pit” or “chiminea,” an average outdoor fireplace features components made of cement or steel and sometimes stone. These materials are chosen for their ability to withstand intense temperatures and other harsh weather conditions.
Outdoor Fireplace Design An outdoor fireplace is typically supported off the ground by non-combustible legs. An outdoor fireplace is similar in appearance to an indoor fireplace. Outdoor fireplaces can be used for cooking, and but they are also an excellent source of heat and beautiful visuals—much like an indoor fireplace. Large stone, concrete, or stucco covered outdoor fireplaces are fairly heavy, so they tend to remain stationary. Some are low to the ground, while others are high. Some are wide, while others are narrow. In addition, many outdoor fireplaces are designed to function as full outdoor kitchens fully equipped with countertops, shelving, and storage space. Outdoor Fireplaces vs. Grills The outdoor fireplace is commonly confused with a close cousin—the grill. It's easy to confuse grills with outdoor fireplaces mainly because they both provide some form of heat. The difference is that grills are covered with a lid most of the time, and providing heat is not its main function. Grills are basically used for cooking and grilling. Types of Outdoor Fireplaces Small outdoor fireplaces are similar in design to a large salad bowl or wok. The actual unit sits on a metal stand and it is covered with a lid when not in use. Much like the stone or stucco versions, small outdoor fireplaces also burn wood. Small outdoor fireplaces don't share the same appearance or capacity as their larger friends, but they do offer several advantages. Small outdoor fireplaces are round in shape, mobile, and easy to use. They are also extremely low-maintenance. It may not look like it at first glance, but small outdoor fireplaces also provide enough heat for smaller groups. Other outdoor fireplace types include medium-sized fireplaces, square-shaped fireplaces, and rectangular-shaped fireplaces that resemble small furnaces. Most medium-shaped versions are mobile and they may be designed to include a screen or top instead of a “chimney” like the traditional stone versions. Best Outdoor Fireplace Values Regardless of their size or height, large, heavy outdoor fireplaces can be costly. Fortunately, there are several less expensive alternatives to choose from. If you're looking for the best value, small, mobile outdoor fireplaces made of copper or metal are your best bet. Keep in mind that most mobile versions should not placed on wood decks because they may sit too low to the ground. If money is no object and you're looking for an outdoor fireplace that commands attention and compliments the landscape, opt for large stone or stucco designs.
