Tachometers are a fairly common instrument. A Tachometer’s more common name is speedometer. Tachometers are used in many other machines than just cars. They commonly calculate speed based on how fast an engine shaft is rotating. This information is given in revolutions per minute. Other types of tachometers count output volume of electrical generators, or counting the pulsations of a ignition system. The History and Evolution of the Tachometer Tachometers have developed from very ancient origins – ancient Rome, in fact. Vitruvius , a roman engineer, developed the first odometer in 15 BC. It was made using a wheel of a known circumference into a smaller frame. It was designed to drop a pebble into a container for every revolution of the wheel. This allowed the distance traveled to be calculated. [AD] [REF="tachometers2"]Continued...[/REF]:
