From this humble beginning, more advances were made. Chang Heng, known better for the first seismograph, made a type of odometer, as did Blaise Pascal, Thomas Savery, Ben Franklin, and William Clayton. Quite a famous list of people developing something so innocuous. Many of these early odometers were made in the same fashion, by counting the number of revolutions of the wheel. This eventually developed into the tachometer, which also took those revolutions into account, but for speed, not distance. Tachometers are also used in an increasing amount of applications, necessitating advances in technology.
