Used Buses

Used Buses

Whether opening a private childcare center or carting around the boys in the band, a used bus may be the perfect purchase for mobility and ease in transferring everything and everyone from place to place. Shortened from the word “omnibus” meaning “for everyone,” a bus is a large vehicle intended for carrying multiple passengers. Buying a used bus entails the same amount of risk as buying any used vehicle, but there are a few tips to keep in mind to stay ahead of a bad experience.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Used Bus

Before purchasing any bus, establish a realistic budget, including the:
  • Cost of insurance

  • Repair

  • Title and licensing

  • Breakdown contingency plans

  • Fuel costs.

Next, determine what exactly the purpose or transportation needs the bus will be fulfilling. Is it shuttling senior citizens from church to planned activities once a week? Or is it for large youth group cross-country trips made during the summer months? Whether traveling weekly short distances or trekking across the continent during the hottest months of the year, different buses can fulfill different requirements, so be sure to shop around.

Used Doesn't Mean Abused

Be sure to professionally inspect the body, chassis, and engine for anything above normal wear and tear. Ask for or research the vehicle history, and repair receipts in order to determine if there are any pre-existing or repeat problems. The previous owner should be able to prove that oil and transmission changes and upkeep were performed regularly, and there are other tests, like oil analysis, that can be performed to further prove that proper maintenance was observed.

The exterior of the bus may show a small amount of rust, but be wary of flaky frames or rusted out hoods and hinge mounts. Also, make sure there is an accessible source for any replacement parts that may be needed throughout the maintenance and upkeep of the bus, as it won't do any good to buy that perfect deal and then have it sit out in the parking lot because nobody has the simple replacement part.

Where to Find a Used Bus

Finding a used bus is just like finding a used car, but be on the lookout for different types of deals that may be offered for buses that wouldn't be for cars. For example, oftentimes school districts will offer multiple buses at a bulk discount rate in order to raise money for much needed supplies and school vehicles. If interested in purchasing more than one bus, this is the place to start. However, if in the market for a single bus, check out online listings and paper publications in order to track sellers down.
